I was very handy when I had a mouse on my old PC but now I have a laptop and miss that mouse. I can't figure out how to do things that require a mouse, such as cut and paste or 'dragging' an item. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi!

Here are directions on how to cut and paste without a mouse:

  1. Highlight the text you want to move
  2. Hold down the Ctrl key and press x to cut the text
  3. Move your cursor to the new location where you want your text (you can use the arrow keys in a Word document, or the Tab key to jump between boxes on the internet)
  4. Hold down the Ctrl key and press v to paste the text

If you want to copy the text instead of cutting it, you would highlight the text you want to move and press ctrl c instead.

Rachel, Thank you for listing the steps that Alice can take using her keyboard to accomplish cutting, copying and pasting.

Alice, I'm interested in having you adjust to the new mouse on your laptop. The touchpad mouse on the laptop is capable of doing exactly what the external mouse on your desktop used to do, but it isn't easy to figure out how to use it.

With the external mouse, you rest your hand on the mouse with your pointer on the left button of the mouse. That left button is what you use most of the time to single click, double click, and click and drag.

With the touchpad, you single click and double click with the left button that is below or to the right of the touchpad. To click and drag, you hold down that left button (with one hand) and then drag across the touch pad (with your other hand). Give that a try a few times and before you know it, you'll be clicking and dragging on the laptop just like you did with your old computer.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Abby
